The Anglo-Saxon church, Lady St Mary, Wareham, Dorset. The ancient minster church of St. Mary stands at the southern edge of the Saxon burgh and town, and within 60 yards or so of the River Frome. Grid reference SY925872.

Lady St. Mary was most likely the church near Wareham that William of Malmesbury claimed was founded by St Aldhelm (Bishop of Sherborne) in the 8th Century. In the later Saxon period, the church functioned as a minster. The church contains some Brittonic inscriptions, a Norman south chapel, and a 12th century lead font. Sources:

History: Wareham was a significant port for traffic with France by 700. William of Malmesbury recorded in the 12th century that St Aldhelm (Bishop of Sherborne by 705) founded a church close to Wareham, and it is likely that Lady St Mary is that church. It was associated with a nunnery, probably the earliest religious foundation in Dorset.

Lady St Marys Church in Wareham is a beautiful Norman church situated at the top of a steep hill and described as one of Dorset's finest examples of such. The western tower is supported by buttresses, which can be seen around this part of town. Below the tower, you can still see the Romanesque sculpture (from 1150-1200 AD). Lady St Marys.

Wareham is an historic market town eight miles south-west of Poole and 17 miles south-east of Dorchester. It has been occupied since before Roman times and the main part of the town is situated on rising ground between the Rivers Piddle and Frome, close to where they enter Poole Harbour. A notable feature is the unique hexagonal lead font dating to around 1200.
