The 211 was originally designed in the early '20s, deriving its heritage from an earlier tube used during WWI in Navy radio transmitters. If you compare the plate characteristics of DHTs, such as the 2A3 or the 300B, the 211/845 family is much more linear. Of course, this linearity has a price: a high plate voltage.

Since the 211 is operated at max B+ voltage, very high quality umbilicals and PSU connectors need to be used which are rated for the voltage, again a cost driver. Yet the 211 and 845 tubes are quite popular and many people need more power than can be obtained from smaller tubes. So the idea for a yet further scaled down 211 came up.

#1 Hi, does somebody have a good 211 / VT4C schematic like Air Tight ATM-211 to recommend ? If it's possible without interstage transformer and 6SN7 input valve. The small tubes have choke supply, and separate PSU for every half of the two triodes. The schematics is the best I know of - based on the experience with tens of 845 amps I rebuilt and the GM-70 sister amp that we sell. The big tube has silicon rectified PSU. The small tubes - have very good tube rectifier. 211 has its own huge choke as well.

Non-linearity. The tube's high current and high gain are made possible with very small distances between the electrodes - less than 1mm. The side effect is that this tube is less linear than a 211, 300B, 2A3, 845 or 805. So such an amplifier needs feedback. Ours is slight, 6dB compared to 20dB in pentode tube amps or 40dB in transistor amps.

Originally designed for radio broadcasting transmitters, the 211 has excellent linearity. This lends itself to an audio amplifier with no feedback (neither local nor global) but still low distortion. Lack of feedback made for a very musical sound. Due to its pure graphite plate, the 211 also offers a big maximum dissipation of 75 watts.

Both the Ongaku and the Cyber 211 are single-ended 'Class A' designs with no global feedback. The analog input of the Cyber 211 directly feeds the E88CC/6922. The 5687 is a high mu dual triode and acts as one tube with drive stage. AC voltage applied to the input goes first to the E88CC/6922 and then to the grid of the 5687.

The 211 was developed for transmitters for the AF modulator stages where it mainly was used in Class B service. It was also used for Class C RF amplification. And of course it is also intended to be used in Class A amplifiers both single ended and push pull. A Class B Push Pull amp with a pair of these can deliver 260W.
