Replacing Ritchie Blackmore with a flashy American, Tommy Bolin - billed as "the best new guitar player in the world" but harbouring a deadly heroin addiction - caused outrage among UK fans. In later years Jon Lord reflected: "I don't think it's a Purple record at all."
