The founders were Assar Gabrielsson, a former egg seller who became the head sales manager for ball bearing giant SKF, and Gunnar Larsson, a mechanical engineer with a mind for cars and smart solutions. Together, they made sure that Volvo was turning a profit already in its third year, by which time the product line had been expanded to include.

Assar Gabrielsson and Gustaf Larson were the two men behind Volvo. Gabrielsson. He began his career at SKF in Göteborg. In time, he became the head of SKF's subsidiary in France and discovered that it was possible to sell Swedish ball-bearings at a lower price than the US suppliers. In 1923 he returned to Sweden to become sales manager for SKF.

Shortly after 1910, Assar Gabrielsson, a native of Korsberga who was born in 1891, had earned a degree in advanced economics and was working for the parliament of Sweden as a stenographer while also laboring away on his father's egg farm. He went to work for SKF in 1916.
