Sophie was the daughter of the King of Württemberg in Germany. Her mother was sister to Anna Pavlovna, Willem III's mother. Sophie and Willem were therefore cousins. The couple had three sons: Willem, Maurits and Alexander. Maurits died of meningitis at the age of six. Willem and Sophie did not get along very well.

The piece, which is set with diamonds, 35 round pearls, and 11 pear-shaped pearls, was likely made by Royal Van Kempen en Begeer.
