Bernard Law Montgomery, 1st Viscount Montgomery, (born Nov. 17, 1887, London, Eng.—died March 24, 1976, near Alton, Hampshire), British field marshal and one of the outstanding Allied commanders in World War II. Montgomery, the son of an Ulster clergyman, was educated at St. Paul's School, London, and the Royal Military Academy (Sandhurst).
