For the Northwest Territories, the floral emblem is the creamy-white mountain avens ( Dryas octopetala ), which blooms in profusion for a short time each spring. Bird: Gyrfalcon The gyrfalcon ( Falco rusticolus) is the largest of the falcons. It was adopted in 1990 as the territory's official bird.

[1] History In the 1950s Yellowknife held a competition to design a coat of arms which was won by Netta Pringle who had lived in Yellowknife during 1954 and 1955. [1] The coat of arms consists of a mine headframe, flanked by a miners' pick and shovel and a maple leaf, with the northern lights above.

The flag of Northwest Territories was officially adopted in 1969. It was chosen as the winning entry in a contest for a new flag.
