Garden Notes from Hawaii KUPUKUPU FERN (Nephrolepsis cordifolia)

The Kupukupu fern has two species that are native to Hawaiʻi. They were planted by hula dancers in hopes to kupu (sprout) knowledge, and represents the start of a new beginning.

Kupupukupu (Nephrolepis spp.) are members of Lomariopsidaceae. There are several common naturalized swordferns and will hybridize with the native species. This is the only Nephrolepis species, or swordfern, in Hawaii that produce underground tubers on the stolons.
