Arnish Point Lighthouse, Stornoway Harbour

Arnish Point Lighthouse. Constructed in 1852, the Arnish Point Lighthouse has acted as a guardian for Stornoway and the Outer Hebrides ever since and now proudly stands on the south beach between the Isle of Lewis and the ocean. Just a short trip from Stornoway, the Arnish Point is a pretty highlight as you continue the road along the east.

A lighthouse, seaweed processing plant and a renewable energy manufacturing yard are situated on Arnish Point at the mouth of the harbour and visually dominate the approaches.. Arnish Point is also earmarked by AMEC as the landfall for its proposed private sub-sea cable which would export the electricity generated from the Lewis Windpower.

The 'Sailing Directions' for the east coast of Lewis, dated 1867 describe a ' lighthouse, painted white, stands on the eastern horn of Arnish Point, on the western side of the entrance to the harbour; and from an elevation of 56 feet above high water is exhibited a revolving white light, which attains its greatest brilliancy every half minute.

Arnish Point Lighthouse (also called Stornoway Lighthouse) was built from a series of iron plates to designs by engineer Alan Stevenson (1807-65) in 1853, and was the Northern Lighthouse Board's first pre-fabricated lighthouse.

Per contra the above, Arnish Point is to be equated with Rubha Airinis, which forms the W side of the outer entrance into Cala Steornabhaigh, the outer part of Stornoway Harbour.

Arnish Point Lighthouse marks the entrance to the harbour of Stornoway, capital of the Isle of Lewis, Outer Hebredis. That is why the lighthouse is often referred to as Stornoway Lighthouse. The Isle of Lewis was owned by Seaforth Mackenzies, but after his bankruptcy, Sir James Matheson bought the island in 1844.

Arnish Point Lighthouse, Alan Stevenson, 1852 Stevenson's last lighthouse had the novelty of being the Northern Lighthouse Board's first prefabricated lighthouse, built of iron lined with timber, with keepers' cottages to the north west.

Arnish Point Lighthouse, built 1852 by engineer Alan Stevenson. A short tapering circular-section tower with a range of single-storey keepers' cottages. J R Hume 1977. This lighthouse was formerly supplemented by a nearby prefabricated tower of iron plates which was lined with wood and carried an 'apparent' light.
