Ultimate Michigan Lighthouse Road Trip, Part 1 Lower Peninsula Travel the Mitten

Sturgeon Point Lighthouse was #2 on our list of 22 lighthouses to visit in Michigan during a week-long trip in June. The grounds are quite extensive but easy to get around. There is an old schoolhouse (Old Bailey School) right by the parking lot. My husband walked down to the beach and found some beautiful beach stones from the Lake Huron shore.

Sturgeon Point State Park is an undeveloped public recreation area that is home to the historic Sturgeon Point Light. The state park covers 76 acres (31 ha) on the shore of Lake Huron three miles (4.8 km) north of Harrisville in Alcona County, Michigan. In addition to the lighthouse and associated museum, the park features a long and shallow.

In 1907, the Charity Island Light was thus automated, and Sturgeon Point followed in 1913. With the installation of the acetylene equipment, the characteristic of the light was also changed from fixed white to flashing white every 3 seconds. Keeper Cardy also passed away in 1913, making him the last full-time Keeper to be assigned to the station.

Historical Information: 1866 - Lighthouse Board requested an appropriation in the amount of $15,000 for a lighthouse at this site. 1869 - Construction began. 1886 - Breakwater built to protect the light station from erosion. 1913 - Lighthouse automated/. 1939 - Electricity brought to the lighthouse. 1941 - Coast Guard left the station.

Sturgeon Point Lighthouse is located five miles north of Harrisville on Lake Huron and was completed in November 1870. The tower is 70 feet, 9 inches tall and is 16 feet in diameter at its base. The light is 3.5 order Fresnel lens made in Paris, France. The light is still maintained by the U.S. Coast Guard. The keeper's house is now a maritime museum which is open to the public from Memorial.

Hours of Operation: The Sturgeon Point lighthouse, Bailey School and gift shop are open for the 2023 season. We will be open Friday, Saturday and Sundays from 11 - 4. Admission to the museums is free. The tower climb is $3.00 per person. Children must be 48" tall to climb the tower. The tower climb is open until 3:30.
