The Tjibaou Cultural Centre (Centre Culturel Tjibaou) is a world-renowned cultural centre located located on a beautiful and serene bay on the outskirts of Nouméa. The centre is named after Jean-Marie Tjibaou, a leader of the Kanak independence movement in New Caledonia.

The Cultural Center Jean-Marie Tjibaou was discovered as the most innovative and exciting project in the city, about 10 km from downtown. Concept It sought to make a tribute to a culture based on respect for its history and traditions, past, present and future, as well as its sensitivity.

Today the Cultural Centre is named in honour of the indigenous Kanak political and independence leader, Jean-Marie Tjibaou, with a whole space and display inside the centre devoted to his life, dramatically ended by an assassin's bullet in 1989.

The Tjibaou Cultural Centre was opened in 1998 on the peninsula of Tina, in the Matignon Accords street, as if to seal the story, since the center was provided for in the Matignon Agreements. At the origin of this incredible building: the famous architect Renzo Piano, author of the Pompidou center in Paris.

The centre itself has some stunning art and artefacts and a tasteful tribute to Jean Marie Tjibaou. Exploring the different chief huts outside was also an experience. This museum is perfectly designed, not only with its architecture, but the way it shares the stories and culture of the Kanak people. A must visit when in Noumea.
